Fagus slyvatica
Tricolor European Beech
‘Purpurea Tricolor’
The Tricolor European Beech (Fagus sylvatica 'Tricolor') is a slow-growing deciduous tree known for its striking variegated foliage, featuring pink, white, and green leaves. It typically reaches 25 to 35 feet tall and 18 to 25 feet wide, making it suitable as a specimen or shade tree. This beech prefers partial sun to part shade, as young trees are susceptible to leaf scorch in full sun but become more tolerant as they mature. It thrives in deep, rich, moist but well-drained soils and is intolerant of wet, poorly drained conditions. Regular watering is important, especially during establishment, but the soil should not remain soggy. For best color and health, provide afternoon shade in hotter climates and avoid drought stress.
