Asclepias tuberosa
Butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa) is a perennial native wildflower known for its bright orange flower clusters and its ability to attract butterflies, especially monarchs. It grows 1 to 2.5 feet tall and prefers full sun with well-drained, sandy or gravelly soils. Butterfly weed is drought-tolerant and thrives in dry to medium soil moisture, making it ideal for low-water gardens. The plant develops a deep taproot, making it difficult to transplant once established, and it may take two to three years to produce its vibrant blooms. Its growth habit is upright and clump-forming, with deciduous, narrow leaves. Butterfly weed is an excellent choice for prairie, meadow, or pollinator gardens due to its low maintenance needs and ecological benefits.
