Chamaecyparis obtusa
Hinoki Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) is a slow-growing, evergreen conifer native to Japan, prized for its graceful, fan-shaped foliage and pyramidal form. It typically reaches 15-25 feet tall and 8-12 feet wide at maturity, though many cultivated varieties remain much smaller. Hinoki Cypress thrives in full sun to part shade, with best color and form achieved in full sun, but it can tolerate some shade as well. It prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil and should be watered deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Protection from strong winds is beneficial, as is avoiding hot afternoon sun in hotter climates to prevent scorching. This species is valued for its elegant appearance and adaptability in both garden beds and containers.
